Using a notebook, laptop, napkin, favourite pen, or writing app consistently creates cues for creativity and productivity, whether you write from a desk, a beach, or a sofa.
2. Set Achievable Goals

Break large projects into manageable milestones. Instead of aiming for a 60,000-word novel all at once, focus on writing 500-1,000 words per day. Short-term goals make the process less overwhelming, help track progress, and better maintain momentum since they’re easier to achieve.

Or, as one of my Creative Writing tutors said, “Wear different hats.” First drafts are not about perfection. As Ernest Hemingway famously said, “The first draft of anything is s**t.” It’s an apt reminder that you’re not aiming for a polished masterpiece straight away. Give yourself time to learn the story, the characters, and the feel of the text. Allow yourself to write freely without overthinking grammar or style, or even content. Just write.

It might take a little practice, but this separation helps to prevent writer’s block and encourage creativity, letting you explore story ideas fully.

Reading across genres exposes you to different styles, techniques, and structures. It trains your eye for language and pacing while inspiring new ideas. Submerge yourself in a literary ocean and take notes on what works and what doesn’t.
Read widely around your chosen genres, within and beyond your comfort zone, and explore genres and writing styles you usually don’t use. Each teaches a different aspect of voice, tone, and storytelling.
5. Find Your Creative Space

A dedicated writing space, whether a quiet corner, a café, or a desk, can enhance focus and creativity. Personalise your area with books, music, plants, scented candles, notebooks, action figures, family or pet photos, a cup of tea in a special mug - items that inspire you. Consistent environmental cues trigger focus and flow. A practical space with consistent sensory stimuli can aid (and even stimulate) your writing.
6. Seek Feedback & Community

It might seem initially somewhat nerve-inducing, but consider sharing your work with trusted peers or writing groups. Constructive feedback provides insight, accountability, and encouragement.

Even stopping and stepping away for 5 minutes to put on the kettle and make a drink allows breathing space and a moment to refresh before returning to your work.
Walks, journaling, or unrelated hobbies can spark new ideas. Protecting mental and physical well-being ensures long-term productivity and enjoyment in writing. If your project is feeling like it’s weighing you down, it’s probably a good time to step away and let it rest for a while.
